NATIONALS 2007

The Westrand Archers have become famous
for the excellent organization of their tournaments, proved time and again
at all the Gauteng Provincials. True to form, they did not disappoint this
time either.
A few months ago, I went with Leon
Vermeulen, the Chairman of the club, to inspect the venue and was
favourably impressed – Jabula Manzi seemed a perfect venue with a varied
terrain for the ranges and also plenty of accommodation and facilities for
food and drinks. I was really looking forward to hosting the Nationals
there.
The first week-end of December arrived
and I managed to get to Jabula by 3.00pm to start registration. All went
smoothly but still too many archers are leaving registration to the last
day, resulting in the Saturday morning being quite chaotic getting
everything ready in time to have an early start. I hope next year these
archers will make a bigger effort to register earlier.
Weather-wise, we had our usual Friday
night deluge, but the skies cleared and afforded excellent conditions for
the archers to go for those qualifying scores for the colours that they
were after.
By the end of the second day excellent
scores were posted and records were smashed in all styles. Quite a few
archers shot a Robin Hood – accuracy of the most expensive kind.
A most amazing feat was the full score
posted by Stefan van de Linde, again proving what an excellent archer he
is.
It was a fabulous week-end enjoyed by
all and I’m sure the archers are looking forward to another Nationals of
this caliber.
Well done and thanks to Leon and his
capable team for organizing such a successful tournament. I look forward
to seeing everyone at all the 2008 events.
