SANIFAA TEAM WORLD BOW-HUNTER CHAMPIONSHIPS 2007.
by JP de Villiers SANIFAA President.
This year, SANIFAA selected an excellent team to represent our association and our country at what would be one of the toughest Bow-Hunter Championships in a long time. The event this year was held in Europe, in Switzerland to be more precise, and as always, the European events are strongly contested. Because it is so expense to travel to the different world events, many of the European archers participate only in Europe and therefore when a significant event is held there, the best come from all directions to compete. Events can become so big and cumbersome to run that a cut-off may be required for the number of participants. This was the case in Switzerland for the WBHC and the entries closed late in 2006. The WBHC was held in the first week of July 2007.
Our SA team consisted of D.P.Bierman, Frans Delport, Benito van Leeuwen, Roberto van Leeuwen, Jaco Wessels, Johan Wessels, Jacques Angelo, Werdie van Staden and Walter Dreyer. I further detailed report on the tour will be published later, but here are the main results.
JMBU : In the Junior Men Bowhunter Unlimited style, Southern Africa took all the medals with Werdie van Staden being the new World Champion JMBU
AMLB : In the Male Long Bow style there was 148 archers ! and Jaco Wessels achieved a remarkable 31 st position.
AMFU : In the Unlimited Freestyle with 84 competitors Benito van Leeuwen finished 6th followed by Roberto van Leeuwen in 8th place
AMBU : In the Bow-Hunter Unlimited with 49 competitors, DP Bierman finished 2nd and Walter Dreyer finished 3rd, with Frans Delport in 11th position.
JMLB : In the Juniors Logbow, Johan Wessel finished 2nd.
Congratulations on the exellent performance of the team and particularly to The World Champion JMBU Werdie van Staden.
In total the team brought home 1 Gold, 3 Silver and 1 Bronze medal. That’s 5 medals for a team of 9 Fantastic ! Well done to the Team Captain Benito van Leeuwen for the great team results.
Remember next year it’s the World Field Championships (Africa Region) which will be held in Namibia. Here is the rest of the calendar for this year, so get out there and shoot those qualifying scores to get into the next SANIFAA World Team !
