Field Archery

Field Archery takes place in undeveloped outdoor areas (as opposed to Target Archery which is presented on a flat open field similar to say a cricket pitch.

Field Archery is performed on a course or circuit of 28 targets that are placed in different aspects and positions, typically in a wooded setting, and at varying distances (both marked and unmarked). The targets are sometimes representations of Circular Targets, Animal Targets, or 3 D rubber animal targets.  A Field archery range is similar to a golf course in that archers shoot one target, score and then proceed to the next target.  A love for the outdoors, walking in the veldt, smelling the earth and admiring the fauna and flora, is integral to field archery. Where sufficient space is available, the range will most often be set out in a format where archers don’t see the other participants for most of the round.

Field archery allows a number of styles, according to the equipment the archers choose to shoot. Field archers use longbows, recurves, compound bows, in fact any form of bow that has ever been made is likely to have gone around a field archery course a few times or more! Sights, stabilisers, string silencers, bow mounted quivers and all sorts of other accessories also make an appearance in Field Archery. Refer to the section on Equipment rules to see the different categories (styles) that are used. Any bow setup can be categorized into one of the styles.

Field archery is also a family sport. Age groups start at the Cubs (as soon as they can hold and shoot a bow ), then progresses to Juniors, Seniors and Veterans - including boys, girls, ladies and men. Truly one of the few sports where the whole family can participate, get outdoors in the fresh air and achieve their goals. Further, with enough dedication, Archers could qualify for Club, Provincial, National and even Protea colours.

The SANIFAA participates in all the IFAA World Championships Events and we have many past and present World Champions in our ranks.
